New streaming release Below is a monster story with a strong ensemble cast featuring Josh Hartnett and Mackenzie Davis, that unfolds over six episodes. Read on for more details about its plot, release date and where to watch.

Below is a six-episode limited series streaming on Netflix from 8 October 2026.

A Fisherman and His Town

In a small harbour town on the coast of North Atlantic Canada, worn out fisherman, Calvin Penney (Josh Hartnett), still dwells on the mysterious death of his father, that took place years earlier. But when something from the ocean begins terrorising his hometown, he enlists the help of marine researcher, Dr. Fonda Howander (Mackenzie Davis), to save the people he cares about most, his family and friends.

A Creature Story From Canada

Created by Jesse McKeown (The Umbrella Academy), Below stars Josh Hartnett (Oppenheimer, Trap) and Mackenzie Davis (Halt and Catch Fire, Station Eleven). Other members of the cast include Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things), Ruby Stokes (Lockwood and Co), Rohan Campbell (Halloween Ends), Kaleb Horn, Willow Kean and more. Karen Walton (Orphan Black), Perry Chafe and Natty Zavitz penned the series. Episodes were directed by Jamie Childs (His Dark Materials), Helen Shaver and Stephen Dunn (Closet Monster). Allison White, Julie Lawrence, Pacesetter and Paddy Wagon Pictures produce this joint British-Canadian production.

Below is based in North Atlantic Canada, more specifically, Newfoundland and Labrador. However, the production was fortunate enough to shoot on location there. Sometimes productions can't access the actual place their story is based in and must find a suitable stand-in, thankfully not here.

Netflix described the story as centring around a creature and said it isn't supernatural. The official tagline reads "Something's in the water."

Hartnett at the Helm

Josh Hartnett is no newcomer to TV monster stories. An A-lister in his twenties, Hartnett's career is currently on an upswing thanks in no small part to the prestige projects he has been appearing in lately. He was in Oppenheimer and then the lead in Trap. He was on television before in Penny Dreadful, where he was Ethan Chandler, a gunman with a secret of his own. Below looks set to continue this strong run for Hartnett.

Mackenzie Davis has made some of her best genre choices lately. From her work in Halt and Catch Fire to the apocalyptic drama Station Eleven, Davis continues to prove herself time and again. In Terminator Dark Fate, Davis demonstrated her comfortability in front-action roles, sharing the screen with literal murderous robots.

Five of Below's seven main characters have the last name Penney. It promises to be a tale about a close-knit family unit and multi-generational drama as much as it is about monsters and the ocean.

Below stars Hartnett as the aforementioned Calvin Penney. Davis stars opposite as Dr. Howander. Charlie Heaton stars as Calvin's son, Wade Penney (Heaton played Stranger Things' Jonathan Byers for nearly a decade). Ruby Stokes stars as Mary Penney, Rohan Campbell stars as Jay Penney, Kaleb Horn stars as Noah Townsend and Willow Kean stars as Ruth Penney.

Six Episodes, One Story

More information about the series' runtime is TBA at this time.

Official Trailer

Below's teaser trailer premiered on the 28 July, while its official trailer (embedded below) dropped on 10 September 2026 and lasts 2 minutes and 23 seconds.

Who It's For

They are looking for a monster story to sink their teeth into on the weekend. If you know you're going to want closure and hate being left hanging, Below is six episodes, which could easily be digested over one weekend. Jaws fans, or those that prefer to watch tense thrillers influenced by the works of Steven Spielberg or John Carpenter will enjoy Below. If you want something scary, but more on the dread and tension side rather than the shock and gore factor, this is the limited series for you. Mark Korven (The Witch, The Lighthouse) has composed Below's score, which is fitting because his scores always seem to drip with dread.

If you're still looking for more recommendations, dark limited series Carrie is streaming on Prime Video and Animals, an unrelated thriller by Ben Affleck, landed on Netflix on 9 October.
